Steady Growth Ahead for Thailand’s Telecom Market Despite Competitive Pressures

Key Highlights from the Thailand Telecoms Industry Report:

Bangkok, Thailand – A new report by Idem Est Research forecasts stable yet modest growth for Thailand’s telecommunications market over the next decade, as competitive and political pressures persist.

The report projects overall telecom revenue to expand at a 1.5% average annual rate from 2023-2030. Drivers include mobile data monetization, 5G network investment, and increased fixed broadband adoption.

In mobile, the report forecasts subscriptions to rise to 106 million by 2030, up just 0.9% annually. Intensifying competition and a maturing market will restrict mobile growth. The consumer shift to 4G/5G and postpaid plans will continue.

Fixed broadband presents opportunities, with household penetration at only 50% in 2022. Investments in fibre networks are fueling growth in high-speed subscriptions, projected to reach 65% million by 2030.

Thailand’s around 56,000 mobile towers are consolidating as 5G rolls out. Independent tower firms own 56% of towers, but revenue per tower will decline as operators merge and build smaller 5G towers.

While steady development is expected, competitive and political pressures will limit Thailand’s telecom growth versus other Asian markets. Yet new network investment and emerging technologies will drive moderate expansion.

“Thailand’s telecom sector faces challenges but has fundamentals supporting persistent growth,” said the report’s author, Landry Fevre. “Operators must adapt to market shifts and leverage new technologies to thrive amid fierce competition.”
