Myanmar Telecom Industry Market Report forecasts 80m mobile and fixed broadband subscribers by 2030

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Steady Overall Market Growth Expected

Key Highlights from the Myanmar Telecoms Industry Report:

A new report by Idem Est Research forecasts steady growth for Myanmar’s telecommunications market over the next decade, despite ongoing political and economic challenges.

The report projects the overall telecom market to grow at an average annual rate of 2.9% from 2023-2030, reaching USD 2.3 billion by 2030. Broadband and mobile subscriptions are expected to increase to 80 million by 2030, driven by population growth, device affordability, and increased adoption of smartphones.

However, the market faces headwinds. The military coup in 2021 has led to economic sanctions and uncertainty for foreign investors. The Capex spending by telecom operators already declined by 32% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Idem Est Research expects network investments to rebound somewhat but remain subdued compared to other countries in Southeast Asia.

Large Opportunity in Fixed Broadband

The fixed broadband segment offers large growth potential, with household penetration still only at 6.7% in 2023. The report forecasts fixed broadband subscribers to grow 20.5% annually, reaching 2.8 million by 2030. Expanding fibre networks by operators like MPT and 5BB will help drive growth.

Mobile Tower Ownership Increasingly Consolidated

On the infrastructure side, tower companies own 56% of the mobile towers in Myanmar as of 2023. Tower revenue growth is expected at 1.5% annually through 2030. However, revenue per tower is forecasted to decline as operators focus on smaller, lower-revenue sites.

“While the 2021 coup slowed Myanmar’s exciting potential as an emerging telecom market, the sector is still expected to show steady growth amid uncertain conditions. However, major development barriers persist, and Myanmar will continue lagging behind its Southeast Asian peers,” says Landry Fevre, Director of Idem Est Research & Advisory.

“Idem Est Research forecasts that mobile subscribers will reach 77 million by 2030, while the fixed broadband market will continue to increase fibre penetration into more households, with over 88% of households using fibre infrastructure. The telecommunications industry is expected to maintain revenue growth momentum, with an average growth rate of 2.9% from 2023 to 2030,” says Landry Fevre, Director of Idem Est Research & Advisory.

Idem Est Research and Advisory’s report on the Myanmar telecom market serves as a valuable resource for industry stakeholders, investors, and policymakers looking to gain a comprehensive understanding of the sector. The analysis highlights the immense potential and opportunities for both local and international players to contribute to the development and innovation of the telecom industry in Myanmar.
